Introduction

A historic Japanese home,
with room for everyone to settle in.

Ueda is a house to enjoy together in Minamiuonuma, Niigata. Gather around the large dining table, discover antique chests and porcelain, and find a quiet corner beneath the old timber beams. Three bedrooms, each with its own toilet and shower, offer space for up to eight guests. The tatami bedroom is not acoustically private: sound carries between it and the shared areas.
The house stands beside the old road to Shimizu Pass, once a route between Niigata and Edo, today’s Tokyo. Its oldest parts are believed to date back more than 200 years. Careful restoration and generous insulation preserve that history while making the rooms comfortable through every season.
Hotel-quality bedding, towels, loungewear and toiletries are ready when you arrive. Local hosts help with the meals you book, while Satoyama Jujo’s concierge supports you in English and Japanese with travel, dining and requests during your stay. You can enjoy the freedom of a country home with a hotel team to turn to.

History & Place

Antique chests, porcelain and lacquerware.
Objects passed down through generations,
ready to be enjoyed again.

This area was once known as Ueda-no-sho, and the old village road still leads towards Shimizu Pass. The large traditional houses recall its history as a stopping place for travellers.
Trade also shaped the objects found in local homes. Sea routes and the Shinano and Uono rivers brought porcelain from Kyushu, lacquerware from Noto and wooden chests from Sado. At Ueda, these crafts sit alongside modern design, ready to be used and enjoyed during your stay.
At the foot of Mount Makihata, Ueda is the largest house in The House Collection. Joetsu Kokusai Ski Resort and Maiko Snow Resort are around ten to thirteen minutes away by car; GALA Yuzawa and Ishiuchi Maruyama offer more options for skiing in Niigata. For an art outing, cross the mountains to Kiyotsu Gorge’s Tunnel of Light, MonET and the wider Echigo-Tsumari Art Field. Our concierge can help you plan a day; see Getting Here for approximate driving times and allow extra time in winter.

Ueda

Before you book

A generous home for three adult households or an extended family travelling together. Each bedroom has its own facilities, but sound privacy differs between rooms.

No on-site hot spring or sauna

Ueda has neither an onsen nor a sauna. Its spacious living room, kitchen and dining room make it a house for spending time together.

Three bedrooms; sound carries from the tatami room

Each bedroom has its own toilet and shower. One is a Japanese tatami room: sound carries between this room and the shared areas, so it does not offer full acoustic privacy.

Garden barbecues depend on the weather

You can choose a garden barbecue, but the area has no roof. If it rains, you will eat in the indoor dining room. Barbecues are also unavailable in winter. The spacious kitchen and dining room give your group room to enjoy dinner indoors.

No restaurants within walking distance

The nearest convenience store is about a 10-minute walk. There are no restaurants within walking distance, so plan transport if you would like to eat out.
