A private home in a forest village.
Two bedrooms, space for six,
and the comfort and care of Satoyama Jujo.
Atema is a private house in a small village in Tokamachi, Niigata, surrounded by beech forest. Open the door to fresh green leaves in spring, autumn colour or the deep, quiet snow of a Niigata winter. Inside, old timber, modern bathrooms and generous insulation make a comfortable home for up to six guests. Each of the two bedrooms has its own bath or shower room, making the house especially welcoming for two families.
You have the privacy of the whole house, with the reassurance of Satoyama Jujo behind your stay. Hotel-quality bedding and amenities are ready for you, local hosts help with booked meals, and our concierge supports you in English and Japanese before and during your visit.
The village lies within the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field, the landscape of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale. Discover MonET and James Turrell’s House of Light, with the concierge helping you check opening dates and plan a route. In winter, the Atema slopes of Joetsu Kokusai Ski Resort are only a few minutes away by car. Satoyama Jujo is about 12 minutes away, beyond the mountain pass.
Atema’s outer walls, floors and ceilings have been carefully insulated, helping retain warmth while preserving the original earthen walls and timber interiors. The result keeps the atmosphere of an old Japanese home and adds the comfort you want to return to after a day outdoors.
Atema and Ueda were restored together. Timber recovered during the work was reused in fittings and furniture, giving materials already part of these houses a new purpose. This careful reuse and improved energy efficiency are part of how we preserve the buildings for another generation.

Both bedrooms have their own toilet and shower, a convenient arrangement for two families sharing the house.
There is no separate living room. The dining room is where everyone gathers. One bedroom also has an attic space, which can feel like a little hideaway for children.
