IZUMI
Stay in a fully renovated 150-year-old village headman’s residence surrounded on all sides by bucolic terraced rice paddies.
Enjoy a special time as you gaze at the snowy landscape and the majestic mountains.
Views that will take
your breath away.
On sunny mornings from autumn through winter and into spring, you can almost always witness a sea of clouds. Mist rising up from the Uono River fills the plains, creating this breathtaking vista. When a sea of clouds is thick, it also envelops all the buildings in view. On days like this, you can encounter amazing scenery as you drive down the road. The most spectacular views can be found along the scenic Uonuma Skyline, where you can see the morning sun shining over Mt. Makihata with the sea of clouds and rice terraces below. The view from the open-air bath is also fantastic. During your stay, be sure to wake up a little earlier than usual so you don’t miss this gorgeous scene.
A space where designer furniture and modern art intertwine.
In the renovation, we reused the splendid beams and pillars that have withstood years of heavy snowfall so that the house can be used for the next 100 years. As with Satoyama Jujo, the house is fully insulated, making it extremely comfortable even in the dead of winter. Timeless furniture by Finn Juhl and Hans Wegner, which can be considered art works in their own right, add color to the old house along with the carefully placed pieces of modern art. Another major feature of Izumi is the private open-air bath. Although the open-air bath at Satoyama Jujo has been voted as having the most spectacular view in Japan by numerous media outlets, the view from the bath at Izumi may be even better.
