About

Story

Satoyama Jujo, was launched in 2014 based on the concept of “10 Stories of the Mountain Village.” Since then, we have welcomed numerous guests to Satoyama Jujo based on our mission of using the inn as a vehicle for content curation to propose and promote a truly authentic lifestyle. In 2021, we opened a new property where you can experience this concept in action: Satoyama Jujo: The House. By preserving traditional houses like these, we are able to pass on something to future generations. We hope your stay here will provide you with a sense of the climate, culture, and history of the region.

A house where you can experience climate, culture, and history.

Surprisingly warm despite its age.
An old house we preserved for posterity.

Concept

Satoyama Jujo’s The House project aims to preserve private residences that were built more than 100 years ago and ensure they can last another 100 years so that future generations can enjoy them. To achieve this aim, we built an entirely new foundation, installed double glazed windows, and finished the walls and ceilings with ample insulation, all while employing traditional construction methods. Although many people have the impression that old houses are cold, The House is so well insulated that the heater can be turned off once the rooms are warm, even during the harshest of winters. So, even though this house is old, it is more comfortable than a modern, state-of-the-art eco-friendly house. Here, you can spend your time relaxing in style while watching the snow fall. Nothing would please us more than for our guests to experience the local climate, culture, and history during their stay in The House. We hope that more and more people throughout Japan will also try to preserve the old houses in their respective areas for the next 100 years.

Project

Satoyama Jujo plans to open several accommodations throughout Uonuma under The House project. All of these will be offered as private house-style suites. The common theme among all these houses is that they are located within local hamlets, albeit slightly off the beaten path, thus allowing our guests to enjoy their privacy while also getting a sense of how the local people live. The beds, furniture, and loungewear are all the same as Satoyama Jujo. We aim to ensure a stress-free stay by stocking the refrigerator with beverages. Although Satoyama Jujo started as a small 13-room inn, we are now planning to redevelop the old private residences scattered throughout the area into spaces where our guests can experience the abundance of the Uonuma region as well as its history and climate.
